Visión canina:
Los perros, a diferencia de nosotros los humanos, siguen usando cómo principal recurso de comunicación el lenguaje “no verbal”. Realmente les entiendo puesto que, si dejas a un lado la lengua Castellana y comienzas a usar el lenguaje “no verbal”, poco a poco te das cuenta de que es igual o más perfecto que la lengua castellana. Digo que puede que sea más perfecto puesto que es un lenguaje puro y fiel a las emociones que sentimos, sucede a tiempo real y resulta muy difícil mentir con lenguaje no verbal. Eso sí, sirve exclusivamente para expresar emociones.
Nosotros los humanos, de forma casi innata, sabemos diferenciar con total precisión los diferentes estados emocionales por los que pasa un perro. Lo que nos cuesta más es dar una respuesta apropiada por nuestra parte. Es decir, la conversación suele ser correcta cuando emite la información el perro y la recibe el humano, pero incorrecta cuando es el humano quién la emite y el perro el receptor.
Un ejemplo práctico de esto sería: Un perro siente nervios con la llegada de una visita a casa. (Nos emite una información que recibimos de manera clara, estoy muy nervioso). Por nuestra parte, nosotros sabemos que la visita que está tras la puerta es de nuestra prima Elisa, su marido Pedro y su bebé de 14 meses, Leo. También sabemos que el bebé tiene miedo a los perros y nuestro perro… está nervioso. Así que de forma automática comenzamos a anticipar lo que va a pasar tras abrir la puerta y nos vamos poniendo nerviosos.
Ahora es cuando comienza la falta de comunicación positiva. Intentamos que nuestro perro se calme usando, mayormente, dos vías; La negociación y la ira. Sé que suena a risa pero… sucede!!! Y, rompiendo una lanza a favor del lenguaje verbal humano… es comprensible por lo perfecto que es.
Tendemos a negociar con el perro o a enfadarnos con él encerrándolo en alguna habitación para, de ese modo, atajar el problema. Todo ello con un estado anímico nervioso generado por lo que creemos que va a pasar, que la va a liar. J
Muchos de los casos que me he encontrado tienen problemáticas de este tipo. Los dueños intentan preguntar al perro qué es lo que le pasa, intentan decirle que se calme con lengua perfectamente castellana, prueban a regañar como si de un humano se tratara advirtiéndole de que si su conducta continúa puede tener consecuencias (el típico; “¡Te vas a enterar!, ¡Me estás cansando ya!).
El perro no tiene la capacidad de comprender que una acción puede, en un futuro, traer consecuencias. El perro entiende perfectamente que una acción en el presente conlleva un resultado, ya sea positivo o negativo.
Esta forma percepción es similar a la que poseen los bebés. El bebé no posee la capacidad de percepción suficiente como para comprender que jugar con un cuchillo puede traer daños en un futuro. Por otro lado y según las experiencias vividas, el bebé comprende muy bien si algo es bueno o es malo. Esto quiere decir que, si alguna vez se ha cortado, el bebé comprenderá que los cuchillos son malos y traen dolor con ellos. Pero esa comprensión, al igual que sucede con los perros, es a tiempo real y no futura. Un cuchillo siempre será malo, corte o no corte.
Nunca podemos pedir a un perro que posea la capacidad de percepción que poseemos nosotros. No podemos decir que si se porta bien iremos al parque, no lo entenderá. En cambio entenderá muy bien si, estando ya en el parque, le decimos que se siente, que nos dé la patita y, como premio, le dejamos ir a correr y a jugar con sus amigos caninos. Eso es una comunicación positiva, plenamente a tiempo real.
Volviendo al caso de la visita de Elisa, Pedro y su bebé, Leo… No podemos comunicarnos de una forma efectiva y pedir que nuestro perro se calme usando la negociación, la ira, la frustración… Primeramente hemos de mostrar al perro la conducta que esperamos de él. Si buscamos que se calme, los primeros que hemos de estar calmados somos nosotros. Seguidamente, si estamos calmados pero nuestro amigo ha tomado la iniciativa de forma demasiado intensa hemos de responder a tiempo real ante ese estado. Lo que a mí me ha dado más resultado profesionalmente son los reclamos de atención. Sería más o menos de esta forma; si nuestro perro está ladrando hacia la puerta y muestra un estado anímico de excitación, hemos de reclamar su atención interponiéndonos entre la puerta y él. Ha de darse cuenta de que ladrar y estar nervioso no le va a servir para nada, a esta parte le llamo “la oxidación de la herramienta por desuso”. Obviamente, para la correcta cumplimentación de este ejercicio, necesitaremos la ayuda de algún familiar o amigo que esté dispuesto a esperar al otro lado de la puerta pacientemente. Si el perro se calma entonces le podemos dar un premio o, simplemente aceptar su conducta.
El siguiente paso sería abrir la puerta intentando en todo momento mantener el nivel de calma de nuestro amigo. Si volviese a ponerse nervioso volveríamos a empezar para que poco a poco se diera cuenta de que la forma que él tiene de hacer las cosas no da resultado.
Casi todos los problemas que me encuentro en mi vida profesional tienen su raíz en una falta clara de comunicación.
Como final me gustaría invitar a todos las personas que han
tenido la paciencia de leerme a aprender a identificar las señales “no verbales” características que poseen sus perros. Una vez sepan identificarlas, les pediría hacer reflexión sobre si lo que
buscan de sus perros es lo que le están mostrando a él. Y, finalmente, si lo que le intentan transmitir a sus perros es lo que realmente quieren que haga. Quitemos el significado castellano,
quedémonos con lo que expresamos con el cuerpo y con la tonalidad de la voz y reflexionemos ¿Se calmará si sigo por esta vía?
